After finding out all the things that didn’t work, I readjusted my goals and expectations. Setting more reasonable short term goals and watching them come to fruition.
The original goals I set forth for being an entrepreneur were those of grandeur and mostly focused around making a boat-load of money. Jumping straight to making earnings wasn’t working for me as I had skipped a whole lot in between. One of the very first things that I had skipped was, what do I even sell? I had jumped right into doing work for people at random utilizing my skills but had not thought to focus my business offerings.
Daily Action Goals
I started off by creating daily goals of action items instead of “results-oriented” goals. For example, instead of setting a goal of “know more about a topic” I set the goal of “Read/watch/listen to 1 hour a day about _____ topic”. I missed a couple of days here and there but trying to stay disciplined and follow the daily routine allowed for me to complete an entire training course marked at 14+ hours in just a few weeks. This training also helped me boost my customer’s returns.
Make your goals be actionable and do them daily.
Long Term Action Goals
I started out by setting high goals that, when I didn’t reach them, crushed my spirit. When I didn’t make the amount of money I thought I would make after 3 months in business, I doubted myself and wanted to quit. After switching my short term goals to action items, it was nice to start seeing some results while crushing goals. That’s when I switched up my long term goals too.
“Create something worth sharing” instead of “get X shares on social media” became my motto. The non-actionable goal of results did not push me towards actually doing anything, just waiting for the results. The results never came because I never did the thing in the first place that would lead to the results.
Even long term goals should be actionable.
Take a Deep Breath
It’s easy to get carried away and work 12 hours a day. No amount of money in the world is going to rewind time. Balance your efforts for work with playtime. It’s not surprising that your best ideas come to you while you’re happy and playing.
